Missions
We have both local and national and international community where we involved ourselves with.
Local Involvement
JFUMC schedules to be a blood donation site at least twice a year. Blood donation is very important to our community. Often when near a holiday or the Winter season, Michigan has a desperate need for blood donations. Your donation can save 3 lives. People who have had surgery, or been in an accident, as well as those receiving treatment for cancer are a few, who we all know and love, who could benefit from your donation of blood. Donors and volunteer workers are needed at each blood drive.
In 2014 the Wellness Team started the Back to School Blast to help children and families get ready for the new school year. The event is free and is held in late July or early August every year. That first year we had 88 children plus parents come to the church; the event has grown every year and in recent years expanded across the street into Blackman Park, with over 1,200 students from schools throughout Jackson County served in 2023. In 2024 we are moving to the American 1 Event Center at the fairgrounds to better accommodate this growing event. We will give away backpacks, school supplies, socks and books and provide a free hot dog dinner. We expect over 50 community agencies to be present to let people know about the services they offer, with many of them also giving out additional school supplies. In recent years community agencies have also given vision screenings, dental screenings, immunizations and car seat checks as well as distributing personal care items. There will be games and activities for kids and a fire truck or a police car might even show up.
Our Community Food Ministry has partnered with the South Michigan Food Bank to reduce hunger and food insecurity in Jackson County. We accomplish this through two efforts. The first is our Fresh Food Give-a-ways which are held on the 2nd Monday of every month at 1:30pm at the Cortland Street entrance. The second is the After School Pack Program. This program provides supplemental food for students at numerous schools in the area. The schools identify those with food insecurity based on their qualifying for free or reduced meals. The bags of food are packaged on Friday mornings and delivered to the schools for distribution. For more information contact the church office.
The mission of the Jackson Interfaith Shelter is working with people experiencing homelessness by providing emergency shelter, prepared meals and assisting with other physical, emotional and spiritual needs when possible. The shelter provides three meals daily to clients as well as community members who present a need. Their goal is to help those experiencing homelessness work toward securing housing as quickly as possible; they encourage employment. Once every other month JFUMC supplies volunteers for Dinner Church where we serve the meal, eat with residents and lead the worship service; individuals volunteer on a regular basis that fits their schedules.
The Jackson Personal Care Ministry is a cooperative of local churches and faith- based ministries that represent a community of diverse theologies and ethnic backgrounds. Other community organizations, service clubs, professionals, and individuals support the effort as well. Jackson has more than its share of poverty. Nearly 30% of city residents live below the poverty level. Food stamps and food pantries help, but they fall short of fully meeting basic needs. The pantry serves low – income residents of Jackson County, with distribution limited to one person per household per week. Clients show proof of residence; proof of financial need is not required.
Our Prayer Blanket Ministry as a tangible way to share comfort, care, and love with members of our church family—and with friends in our wider community. Each blanket is lovingly handmade by church members and prayed over with intention and care.
Prayer blankets are available in the glass cabinet located in the Welcome Center. Please feel free to take one and pass it along to someone who needs a reminder that they are deeply loved, held in prayer, and not alone.
We are in partnership with Together We Can Make a Difference and other area churches for the Priceless Gift Store. The Priceless Gift Store has operated since 2005 but is only open 12 days a year, beginning on the Friday after Thanksgiving. The very special thing about this store is everything is free for families who otherwise would not be able to provide Christmas gifts for their children. With volunteers needed for preparing the space to look like a true shopping center, gathering toys, mittens, hat, scarves, books, etc., the “sale” begins at Christmastime by helping people choose treasures for their children. In 2022 JFUMC made and donated 397 hat and mitten sets.
National & International Involvement
Each October since at least 1975 we have joined other churches for the Jackson Area CROP Hunger Walk to raise money for the international, national and local hunger relief efforts of Church World Service. Seeds and tools for community gardens, clean water supplies, livestock, beehives; all these and many more are ways the CROP Hunger Walk helps empower people to raise themselves out of poverty. Twenty-five percent of all that’s raised comes back to Jackson to support local food pantries, food distributions and meal programs. In 2023, 96 Jackson area CROP walkers raised nearly $14,000.
Our congregation faithfully supports the work of the Mujila Falls Agricultural Project in Zambia. Missionary Temba Nkomozepi operates a large farm to address local food insecurity issues and to provide employment and training for local farmers. Our financial support helps this vital ministry continue.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) connects the people of the United Methodist Church to Jesus Christ’s mission of loving our neighbor as ourselves. Many people suddenly find their lives turned upside down by a tornado, hurricane, earthquake, fire, flood or other disaster. Many people live daily with poverty and famine with no access to clean and healthful water.
UMCOR helps all United Methodists to respond to these needs with financial gifts, much-needed supplies, and the physical hands-on work of volunteers to provide recovery help to those who have suffered disaster. UMCOR helps those who face daily challenges, equipping them with materials and education on providing healthy, nutritious meals for each family, or how to pasteurize water, making it safe to drink. UMCOR also teaches communities how to eradicate disease, making them safer places to live. For 80 years, UMCOR has helped the people of the United Methodist Church respond with compassion and practical help to those in need in the United States and all throughout the world. Please explore all the ways UMCOR provides help by exploring their website at http://www.umcmission.org/umcor.
The JFUMC Mission & Outreach Team provides vocational training and other educational expenses for a student through the Zimbabwe Outreach Mission. Our donations will be used to ensure that young girls will learn life-changing skills and empowerment to reach their dreams of economic and cultural emancipation. This crucial training is a weapon against human trafficking, sexual abuse, domestic and gender violence.
